The Commission recently completed a series of five major
regional events in Africa to present the report to a range
of stakeholders and provide an opportunity for groups to
debate the implications of the recommendations.
Commissioners Fola
Adeola, Michel
Camdessus and William
Kalema were involved in the meetings which responded
to a specific commitment made to give feedback to the
same groups that were involved in the Commission’s
Africa consultation programme in late 2004. Both civil
society and the private sector took part. Particular
efforts were made to include individuals who contributed
to earlier consultation events.

Each event generated a robust debate. Participants generally
endorsed the report and welcomed the wide reach of its
analysis. A common feature of the discussions was a concern
about implementation and the broader long-term political
commitment that this requires. Much of the discussion
focussed on the critical role that civil society and
the private sector can play in implementation.
The events have resulted in the organisation of a number
of national workshops to further debate and disseminate
the report. They also helped to establish a platform
for coalitions of joint advocacy both within Africa and
potentially between northern NGO’s and those on
the continent.
