On 29 May a new coalition of North
African civil society was created to help drive
forward
Africa's development and its fight against poverty.
The coalition was announced at a meeting of
civil society representatives in Algiers, which was
organised by the Commission for Africa and Lead Francophone
International. The meeting was designed to discuss
the recommendations of the Commission for Africa
report.
Commissioner Michel
Camdessus and Sir
Nicholas Stern,
the former director of policy and research at the
Commission for Africa, presented the report and visited
Algerian President
Bouteflika.
Commissioner Camdessus praised President Bouteflika
for his role in helping to disseminate
the
work of
the Commission for Africa more widely in the region
and to increase levels of understanding over its implications
and
importance.
