Online Forums

Web based discussion forums were a valuable addition to the Commission’s consultation work, bringing in the views of hundreds of people around the world including many from Africa. Five separate online consultations were carried out aimed at different groups.

ODI Consultation with African Think-Tanks and Non-State Institutions

Overseas Development InstituteThe Overseas Development Institute organised an e-consultation targeting African research organisations which ran during July and August 2004. 65 African organisations participated in this exercise which was structured in two phases – an ‘Initial Consultation’ during which general comments and submissions were invited followed by a moderated e-discussion. Reports on both phases are available below.








Commission for Africa Website Debate

From 15 November to 17 December 2004 the Commission ran a major open e-consultation exercise to bring in the widest possible audience. Nearly 300 contributions and comments were posted during this period. There were 203 registered participants including 69 from twenty-one African countries. The discussion was moderated for the Commission by the Overseas Development Institute.





Lead Online Forums

Lead InternationalLead International and Lead Francophone Africa ran three separate online consultations in west, central and north Africa in November and December 2004 as a precursor to the regional civil society consultation events that they organised in Dakar, Douala and Alexandria. These online consultations expanded the reach of the regional consultation work by bringing in comments from hundreds of people, many of whom were not able to attend the events themselves. AMREF ‘Speak for Africa’ Online Forum

AMREF AMREF ran their “Speak for Africa” e-consultation exercise ahead of the east Africa regional civil society consultation events that they organised in Nairobi in early December.

Canadian Department of Finance Online Consultation

Building on consultation meetings in Calgary, Ottawa and Montreal Ralph Goodale organised an online consultation exercise on African development issues which was open to a wide Canadian audience. This took place between mid October and the end of December 2004.
